Keynote Speaker: Salena Beaumont Hill

Salena Beaumont Hill, Ph.D., is a citizen of the Apsáalooke (Crow) Nation, a descendant of the Amaskapi Pikuni (Blackfeet) Nation. She was raised in Pryor, Montana on her family’s ranch. Her Apsáalooke name is Baawátbakala Xíasaash which means “Shining Crucifix”.

Salena serves as an Assistant Professor in the Doctoral Program of Leadership Studies at Gonzaga University and holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Montana. Her scholarship and teaching are rooted in Indigenous philosophies and grounded in Indigenous worldviews.

During her doctoral studies, Salena learned from Indigenous scholars who centered their work in Indigenous methodologies. These experiences strengthened her grounding in Indigenous Knowledge Systems and offered frameworks that now guide her in centering Apsáalooke (Crow) methods in her teaching while upholding the core Indigenous values of relationship, responsibility, reciprocity, and respect.

Her teaching and research explore relationality, personal development, and leadership with a focus on Indigenize academic spaces. She works to cultivate inclusive and culturally responsive learning environments that honor Indigenous ways of knowing and promote authentic leadership.

Salena is a mother, grandmother, auntie, sister and wife and she cherishes the responsibility of each of these roles. The accomplishments of her family members are among her greatest joys.
